I have been a big fan of TV sitcoms for quite some time and as I look back upon the past decade or so, I can see that many of the 90’s Sitcoms are still very popular among today's television viewing audience. Popular TV sitcoms like Frasier, Friends, Home Improvement, The Simpsons and The Fresh Prince of Bel-air that were playing on a great deal of television sets in the 90`s are still being watched daily as reruns by a surprising amount of viewers all over the world. Although the amount of faithful viewers of 90’s sitcoms is not what it was when they were first released, all of the sitcoms I have mentioned still have a faithful following of fans watching their reruns on a daily basis.
If you were to stop and think about what the early days of television sitcoms were like when compared to the 90’s sitcoms, it is easy to see the differences between the two eras when it came to what was allowed to be shown on television. For instance, back in the 60’s, a TV sitcom like the Dick Van Dyke Show you were lucky if you saw so much as a peck on the cheek when it came to showing affection between husband Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) and his wife Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore). And if you are old enough to remember, the Petrie’s slept in separate twin beds, although, at some point they must have moved them together because they had a son called Ritchie. Now, compare the very funny, but very proper 60’s sitcom Dick Van Dyke Show with the 90’s sitcom Friends, which was very funny, but very open sexually. I don’t believe there was any subject on Friends that was considered taboo.
